Heavy rain has triggered a massive landslide in southern China, killing two people and leaving five others missing.

Record rainfall of more than 700 millimeters has been observed in parts of Guangdong Province since the rain began to fall earlier this month. The rain has caused flooding and mudslides across the province.

A massive landslide in the suburb of the main city of Guangzhou on Wednesday engulfed 14 residents.

Two of them were later confirmed dead while seven others were rescued. A search and rescue operation continues for the remaining five missing.

Several houses in the area collapsed or were damaged. Heavy machinery has been brought in to remove the rubble.

Last month, more than 40 people died in rain-induced flooding and mudslides in the suburbs of Beijing.
