THE Phyu Chaung hydropower plant, located in Phyu Township, Bago Region, generates 40 megawatts per day, and the dam protects against flooding in irrigated areas in the township.

The region receives an average of 100 inches of rainfall every year, and the water capacity of the dam is 632,539 acre-feet. The dam is 245 feet in height and 1,020 feet in length. It can store water up to 632,530 acre-feet. The patrol team always watches the water level, and the two main canals of 19 feet long spillway pump 23,050 cubic feet per second and the two 20-megawatt generators generate 40 megawatts per day.

“As the rainy season is ending, the dam is now full. It generates 40 megawatts of electricity daily and supplies it to the national grid. The patrol teams of the reservoir are constantly monitoring the water level, and water is being released into the streams through the main sluice gates. By the end of December, water will be distributed from the left and right canals to irrigate the summer paddy fields in Phyu Township.

The Phyu Chaung Dam, located near the western part of the Yangon-Mandalay highway, protects the water flows into the mountain ranges in the western part of Bago Yoma. The Bago Yoma wildlife sanctuary prevents the fields in Phyu and Zeyawady from the floods. The dam also supplies water for summer paddy, and will start distributing water to the summer paddy fields in Phyu Township in December. — Nyein Thu (MNA)/KTZH
