TO mark Sarsodaw Day, MPT donated 4,000 copies of books at the Myanma Posts and Telecommunications Training Institute in Pazundaung Township, Yangon, yesterday morning.
General Manager U Ye Min Oo of the Management and Legal Affairs Department of Myanma Posts and Telecommunications, first explained the reason for the donation and presented the book donation list to the Universities’ Central Library.
Mr Hiroyuki Okai from the Operations Department of MPT-KSGM JO, along with officials, then presented 4,000 copies of books on fiction, non-fiction, technology, science and general knowledge to representatives from the Universities’ Central Library, the Library and Information Science Department (Yangon University Library), Sarpay Beikman and the National Library.
Dr Hlaing Hlaing Gyi, Librarian of the University’s Central Library of Yangon University, also delivered a speech of thanks.
The first Literary Day ceremony in Myanmar was held on 15 November 1944 at the Myaing Theatre on the banks of Kandawgyi Lake in Yangon. Since then, Literary Day has been celebrated every year on the First Waxing of Nadaw, and the noble tradition has continued to this day with poets’ felicitation ceremonies, literary lectures and tributes to veteran poets.
“This is the first time that MPT has donated books nationwide to commemorate Sarsodaw Day. We are delighted to be able to donate across the country at the same time. We believe that by promoting the reading habit among young people in particular, we can contribute positively to development. We would like to express our special gratitude to every member of staff who contributed to this donation,” said Mr Hiroyuki Okai of the Operations Department, MPT-KSGM JO.
The books were donated to libraries, public-centred libraries and the city libraries of the Department of Information and Public Relations in 13 regions and states, including Yangon. — Oktha/MKKS
